2019 STATE JUNIOR LIFEGUARD CHAMPIONSHIP EVENT RULES

1000 METER RUN
Competitors must run on the beach to the flag at the 500 meter mark, go around the marker flag
clockwise making a right turn around the flag then return back crossing the finish line between the two
cones.

200 METER SWIM
Competitors enter the water and swim 200 meters keeping all the marker buoys to their right. The event
ends when the competitor crosses the finish line up the beach between the cones.

100 METER RUN-SWIM-RUN
Competitors must run 100 meters on the beach keeping the marker cone to their right and enter the water
to swim 100 meters make a right turn on the buoy and run down the beach 100 meters to the finish line
between the two cones.

IRON GUARD
Competitors must run on the beach to the flag at the 250 meter mark, go around the marker flag
clockwise making a right turn then run back to the starting line. Upon their return, they must go around the
cone clockwise keeping it on their right as they enter the water. Competitors must then swim 200 meters
keeping the marker buoys to their LEFT then exit the water and retrieve a rescue board then turn left
around the marker cone, enter the water and paddle 200 meters turning right clockwise around the
marker buoys, then paddle back to the beach. The event ends when they cross the finish line up the
beach between the cones.

5 PERSON PADDLE BOARD RELAY
Competitors must start behind the starting line cone then enter the water and paddle 50 meters turning
clockwise around the marker buoy keeping it to their right and return to shore. They must then cross the
starting line with their board before passing if off to their teammate. The event ends when the final relay
team member crosses the finish line completely with their board. A minimum of three paddlers is required
per team.

FLAGS
Competitors will be required to run a distance of approximately 25 meters and retrieve a flag. All
competitors must line in a prone position evenly prior to the starting procedure. The starter will give the
“heads up, heads down” command and then blow the whistle to start. Two false starts by a competitor will
be grounds for a disqualification from the event. Competitors are not to build sand mounds under their
chests. When given the heads down command, the palms of their hand must be on top of one another.
Any intentional physical contact such as grabbing, elbowing, tripping, or pushing will be grounds for
disqualification. If two or more competitors grab the same flag stick, the competitor with the hand closest
to the mark on the flag will be deemed the winner.
*** Any discrepancies may be discussed between the lead instructors from each team. However, the head
judge will make the final decision on any discrepancy. All decisions are final and there will be no appeal
process.

SCORING
1st place – 6 points, 2nd place – 5 points, 3rd place – 4 points, 4th place – 3 points, 5th place – 2 points, 6th
place – 1 Point
